KUALA LUMPUR: The Government is considering a model to help pay for infrastructure costs so that developers can sell houses below the market price, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.

Najib said developers interested in building affordable homes could approach the 1Malaysia people’s housing programme (PR1MA) to work out such an arrangement.

“We can come up with a government allocation to defray the infrastructure costs,” he said during an interview on Chinese radio station Melody FM’s “Morning Boss” show.

Najib said RM500mil had been allocated under Budget 2013 to build 18,000 affordable homes at “major locations.”

He added that PR1MA would be given unutilised government land to build the homes.

The announcers of the station had asked Najib on a number of current issues, including the expensive property prices.

Other issues that were discussed during the special one-hour live interview were Budget 2013, sports development, living costs, Chinese education and crime.

Najib has made several radio appearances since become prime minister in 2009, and Melody FM was his fourth visit to Astro Radio.
